The Science of Sharpening

Sharpening is the process of emphasizing the detail of an image. By increasing the contrast along edges and areas of contrast within the image, you can make the picture look “crisper” or more focused. Sharpening is especially important after an image has been upsampled. Photoshop's Filters menu offers four sharpening filters, and you'll find the Sharpen tool in the Toolbox.

How Sharpening Works

The Sharpen tool and the Sharpen and Sharpen More commands increase the contrast between neighboring pixels. They affect every pixel within the image or selection (commands) or under the brush (tool). Figure 15.26 shows the result when Sharpen More is applied to a selection.
