Organizing with Layers

In early versions of Illustrator, the Layers palette was a convenience for organizing artwork. Now, not only can you arrange your artwork on layers, but you also can use the Layers palette to rearrange those elements. No longer do you need to select an object or a path on the artboard to move it from one layer to another. The procedure is as simple as dragging and dropping right in the Layers palette.

Creating New Layers and Sublayers: Advanced Techniques

When you click the Create New Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette, a new layer is created directly above your currently active layer. This new layer is always at the same hierarchical level as your current work. In other words, if you are working on a sublayer that is a sublevel of a sublayer, the Create New Layer button gives you a new sub-sublayer. The Create New Sublayer button creates a sublayer, below the currently active layer.
