If Illustrator offered only the Pen and Gradient tools and the Color palette, we would still be able to use it to create the majority of the artwork we produce today. However, it would take a lot longer and would perhaps not be quite as precise. Thankfully, Illustrator offers a tremendous number of tools, palettes, and commands that make the creation process easier. Many of the capabilities we take for granted are simply shortcuts. The Rectangle tool, for example, does nothing more than create four-sided paths. These are quite easy to produce with the Pen tool, yet we think of the Rectangle tool as a basic component of Illustrator.
