Chapter 37. Illustrator and the Web > Save for Web and Image Optimizing

Save for Web and Image Optimizing

Save for Web is used with both Illustrator and Photoshop. Although there are a couple differences, generally speaking, the functions and options are the same. Illustrator's Save for Web feature offers SVG and SWF (Flash) output; Photoshop's version includes an Edit in ImageReady button. When it comes to creating GIF, JPEG, PNG, and WBMP files, the two versions have the same capabilities.

Save for Web is designed to do exactly that—save images for the Web. You use it to create an image that balances image quality with size (the smaller the file, the faster the download and the less the server storage requirement). It strips out most extraneous information, such as thumbnails and previews, although you can retain a file's EXIF information (metadata).
