At its heart, painting in Photoshop is nothing more than applying color to pixels using tools. Unlike many other Photoshop techniques that require a selection to identify where pixels will be edited, painting tools use brushes. Consider a brush to be sort of a moving selection. The brush defines an area within which pixels are altered. Like a selection, a brush can be round, square, or irregularly shaped, and it can be feathered or hard edged.
