Fill Patterns

Bounding boxes are great for planning and for regulating space around your artwork within the pattern. They are not, however, always necessary. If, for example, you want a simple star as your fill pattern, you just draw the star, select it, and choose Edit, Define Pattern. That's all there is to it. Your star will repeat in nice, orderly rows throughout any object you choose.

Fill patterns can be complex or simple, plain or ornate. All, however, have several things in common. As discussed earlier, a number of tools and techniques cannot be used to create patterns. In addition, all fill patterns tile from the ruler origin. All fill patterns are stored in the Swatches palette and are kept with a particular document. More complex patterns should be smaller for efficiency. Simple patterns can be larger. Most fill pattern swatches should be between 1/2- and 1-inch square.
