Chapter 24. Creating and Editing Paths > Illustrator's Auto Trace Tool

Illustrator's Auto Trace Tool

Although no substitute for a dedicated tracing program such as Adobe Streamline, the Auto Trace tool can do an adequate job of creating vector outlines of bitmap (raster) images. The tool has only two options—Tolerance and Tracing Gap—that you set in Illustrator's preferences. The Tolerance setting establishes how close the tool must be to an edge in the image being traced, and the Tracing Gap setting tells the tool which breaks in an edge to ignore. Figure 24.33 shows the Auto Trace tool's preferences, along the bottom of the dialog box, as well as a likely candidate for a successful trace.
