Chapter 24. Creating and Editing Paths > Using the Paintbrush and Pencil Tools

Using the Paintbrush and Pencil Tools

Many of Illustrator's tools create paths while they create objects. A couple tools, however, are designed with path creation, rather than object creation, in mind.

The Paintbrush Tool

The Paintbrush tool (default keyboard shortcut B) creates freeform paths. The paths can be filled, stroked, and edited like any other path. Although any path can be stroked with a brush, the Paintbrush tool and its cousin the Pencil tool (discussed in the next section) are well equipped to work with the Brushes palette and its content. (Working with brushes is discussed in Chapter 26, “Working with the Four Types of Brushes.”)
