Chapter 24. Creating and Editing Paths > How Anchor Points Shape Paths

How Anchor Points Shape Paths

To understand how paths are shaped, it's important to understand how anchor points work. The path's segments are what we stroke and fill and otherwise use in Illustrator to produce art. However, it's the path's anchor points that actually determine the shape of those segments. You edit the shape of a path by manipulating the anchor points.

The location of an anchor point on the artboard is relatively insignificant in shaping a path. Rather, it is the relationships among anchor points that are important. The distance and direction among the anchor points determines the shape of an object. In addition, anchor points determine whether a path segment will be straight or curved.
