Chapter 6. Color Management in the Adobe... > What Is Color Management?

What Is Color Management?

In professional graphic arts, the attitude toward color management falls into, very generally, two categories: those who use elaborate hardware, software, and proofing technologies to ensure that color is produced accurately, and those who just eyeball an inkjet print or (increasingly) a screen-based PDF and say, “That's good to go.” (Interestingly, in both these cases, everyone thinks that they're doing color management, which shows how vague the term can be, even to pros.)

It is precisely because of the advanced color-reproduction capabilities of applications such as Photoshop (and the Creative Suite applications in general) that the prevailing tendency toward color management is to “set it and forget it” (as Ron Popeil would say). In other words, you simply turn color management on in Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, and not worry about it again.
