Mastering Photoshop

Digital Cameras and sRGB

According to the EXIF data I see in File Browser, my camera is capturing in the sRGB color space. I thought sRGB was a very limited color space, intended for the Web and not appropriate for general use. What should I do?

Many cameras indicate in their images' metadata that the embedded profile is sRGB, even when the image was captured in a much broader space. The false sRGB tag is included to ensure that the camera is “Windows compliant.” The problem comes when Photoshop actually converts the original colors to that sRGB color space. To prevent this unintentional degradation of the image, go to Photoshop's File Handling Preferences and check the box labeled Ignore EXIF profile Tag.
