Working with the Color Table

Images in Indexed Color mode use a color table to record the colors used in the file. Because such images use 8-bit color, there can be a maximum of 256 distinct colors in a file. The content of the color table is initially determined by the existing colors in the image (or selected slice) and the Colors field in the Settings area of Save for Web (see Figure 24.20) or ImageReady's Optimize palette.

Figure 24.20. In addition to using the pop-up menu, you can change the number of colors by using the up and down arrows or typing a value directly in the field.
