Chapter 21. Retouching and Restoration Basics > Photo Restoration Techniques

Photo Restoration Techniques

Photo restoration is a skill that takes a great deal of time to master. Much professional photo restoration is still done non-digitally, but Photoshop is making it easier to resurrect old (or even recent) family photos that have not stood the test of time unscathed (like many of those photos' subjects). Over time, images can become discolored, faded, and torn. Not all photos can be saved, but you'd be surprised how many can be.

The first step in photo restoration is to make good-quality scans of the photos. Before scanning, however, decide how big you want the image to be. In other words, what are you going to do with the images? If you want to print them out from an inkjet printer at 100%, you just need to scan at 100%. If you want to make posters or enlargements, scan at or close to the size you'll ultimately want. If you're scanning much larger than 100%, make sure your scanbed is clean, or you'll have a lot of cleanup, in addition to the restoration, to worry about.
