Chapter 23. Photoshop, Imageready, and W... > Creating Seamless Background Images

Creating Seamless Background Images

There are several ways to create background textures and tiles for your Web page, using a source image or some simple pixels precisely painted to create a seamless vertical tile. Although there are Photoshop plug-ins to create seamless tiled images to form a background pattern, many plug-ins create patterns that are too busy to be used as a simple texture. You might want to create the illusion of a smooth solid sidebar running down your page, which you can do with only a few tileable pixels. Seamless tiled textures and patterns don't need to be used as the entire background, however. You can choose to fill just a panel or sidebar with a tiled image texture, such as bricks, rocks, wood, or metal, to create volume without forcing the visitor to download a huge image file.

If you want to create a quick but undistinguishable seamless tile from a source image, simply use the Pattern Maker as shown in the following section.
