System-Level Color Management

A good place to start your color management is at the system level. Both Macintosh and Windows offer color management systems (CMSs) that can work across programs and with monitors, printers, scanners, and digital cameras.

Macintosh CMS: ColorSync

In Mac OS X, ColorSync is found in the System Preferences. You can specify ICC profiles for Input, Output, Display, and Proof (see Figure 9.2). The selected profiles are the assumed profiles—Photoshop defaults to these profiles, but you can change them on a document-by-document basis if necessary.
