Moving Artwork from Photoshop to Illustrator

There was a time that bringing a Photoshop image into Illustrator simply meant using an appropriate file format to get a rectangle full of pixels in place. Occasionally, you might have needed to export paths from Photoshop to Illustrator for purposes of alignment or preparation of a trap.

Things have changed, now that Photoshop supports vector type and shape layers. These capabilities make transferring images between the programs feasible, perhaps even attractive in a variety of situations. Illustrator's capability to maintain Photoshop layers and transparency also adds to the feasibility of moving Photoshop files into Illustrator. Photoshop's opacity masks are converted to layer masks when you open a Photoshop file in Illustrator.
