Chapter 30. Javascript, Applescript, and... > Scripting Support for Photoshop

Scripting Support for Photoshop

New to Photoshop is scripting support. Just as Actions control Photoshop by playing a series of recorded tasks, so too can scripting languages. However, scripting languages can do things that Photoshop's Actions cannot. For example, Visual Basic (Windows) and AppleScript (Macintosh) can call or invoke another program (make it active and issue commands), working with it along with Photoshop. In addition, scripts can contain conditional logic, unlike Actions, and can make decisions based on the document's current state.

This chapter is not intended to teach programming languages nor script writing. Instead, it is aimed at introducing you to the combination of scripting languages and Photoshop. If you're familiar with scripting (in any of the three languages supported by Photoshop), you'll learn how to integrate those skills with Photoshop. If you're not familiar with scripting, this chapter perhaps will show you a powerful new capability that you might want to learn.
