HiFi Color Separations

We know what you're thinking—HiFi color separations? What does my stereo system have to do with color separations? The closest it ever comes is the cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon.

What Is HiFi Printing?

The short answer is that it is any type of printing (for our purposes here, offset printing) that uses more than the usual four process color inks. One common iteration that has been around for a long time basically involves adding a fifth or sixth color—what are called “bump plates.” These additional colors are usually specially mixed colors, maybe even metallic inks or varnishes, that add effects or make a specific design element stand out. Packaging, for example, often uses special colors, as do many magazines (at least on the cover). Greeting cards also use a variety of fancy inks.
