Scanners: Hardware Basics

Images can be digitized using scanners as well as digital cameras. Although hardware exists to make accurate three-dimensional scans, the vast majority of scanning for Photoshop involves flat, 2D originals. Most originals fall into one of two categories: reflective materials and transparencies.

Reflective, in this situation, indicates that light bounces off the original and is captured when it returns. Paper is the primary example of reflective material. Photographs, pages from books and magazines, and even samples of canvas or brick can be considered reflective.
