Chapter 15. Channels: Color and More > The Channels Palette

The Channels Palette

Both color channels and alpha channels are stored and managed in the Channels palette. Understanding the mechanics of the palette simplifies working with channels.

The Anatomy of the Palette

The component color channels—those channels that are built into the document's color mode—always appear at the top of the Channels palette. Any spot color channels or alpha channels also stored in the palette appear below the component colors. To make a channel active, click on it in the palette. You can Shift-click to activate multiple channels. Clicking on the composite channel (when the color mode has one) activates all component color channels, but not alpha or spot channels. An alpha channel appears as a grayscale image when it is the only active channel, but as a translucent red overlay (by default) when one or more color channels are also visible.
