Chapter 18. Applying Photoshop's Filters > What Do the Filters Do?

What Do the Filters Do?

Photoshop filters have several functions, but primarily they are used to rearrange or modify the pixels on an image or image layer to blur, sharpen, paint, distort, transform, or texturize. Since the first version of Photoshop, with its dozen or so built-in filters with minimal functionality and no preview, there have been several third-party “plug-ins” with varying functions and effects to enhance Photoshop's creative edge. Adobe has acquired and engineered several of these effects and incorporated them into the base set of plug-in filters that ships with Photoshop 7. You can still purchase several third-party plug-ins from companies such as Extensis, Alien Skin, Procreate, and XAOS Tools, to name just a few.

Be sure to check out the third-party demo plug-ins included on the book's CD-ROM.
