Compositing and Collaging: Common Techniques

Compositing, roughly defined, is inserting one image or part of an image into another. Collaging is combining disparate elements in the same image. Collaging tends to be a bit more artistic than compositing, and collaging in Photoshop is one of the hallmarks of digital art. These techniques are really what Photoshop is known for—and indeed what has made Photoshop something of a household name even among people who have never even used the program. If you've ever read The Onion (www.theonion.com) or watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, you know that Photoshop can often be used to humorous effect. At the same time, the ability to seamlessly integrate different images has also produced some limits on the use of photographs as evidence in court trials—it's too easy to doctor images these days.

There are myriad ways of compositing images in Photoshop, but here are some common ones:
