The Magic of Editing in 16-Bit

Because professionals are so concerned with maintaining the absolute highest quality, many now opt to shoot their high-end digital photos in “Raw” mode, so they can do their color correction in 16-bit mode (called “high-bit” editing). Although the file size of these Raw photos is nearly doubled, the advantage is that you can make many tonal corrections without the loss of quality normally associated with editing standard 8-bit images. Plus, since Photoshop CS now offers wider support for 16-bit editing (including using layers, adding type, shapes, etc.), it will probably become more popular than ever.
