Chapter 1. One Hour Photo: Photographic ... > Trendy Fashion Blowout Look

Trendy Fashion Blowout Look

This is probably the hottest trend in fashion portrait retouching right now, and you see it everywhere, from CD covers (like Madonna's “American Life”) to print ads, to movie posters (like Jet Li's movie Cradle 2 the Grave), and everything in between. The effect you're going for is one where the skin tone turns completely white, leaving subtle shadow areas to reveal just the eyes, nostrils, lips, and outline of the face. Here's the trick!

Quick Tip: Turning a path into a selection

Once you have part of a path selected using the Direct Selection tool, you can turn it into a selection by going to the Paths palette and choosing Make Selection from the palette's pop-down menu. The advantage of using this method is that you can add feathering (among other options) in the Make Selection dialog box. The disadvantage is that if you don't want feathering or some of the other options, you waste time in a dialog box you don't need.

Another method (if you don't want feathering) is to click on the Load Path as a Selection icon at the bottom of the Paths palette. It's the third icon from the left that looks like a circle of dots.
