Hollywood Grunge Effect

I originally saw a great tutorial that showed me the basis of how to do this effect on the Web site www.dreaminfinity.com. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of creating these trendy “neo” grunge effects that are so popular in movie titles, CD covers, and ads targeting young consumers. Here's my take on how to create this popular effect.

Quick Tip: Creating new layers

There are a number of ways to create new layers. The quickest way is to click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. No dialog box pops up to slow you down—you immediately get a new blank layer.

You can use the keyboard shortcut Shift-Command-N (PC: Shift-Control-N) to create a new layer and bring up the New Layer dialog box (so you can name your layer as you create it), but that's a bit slower.

If you're looking for the absolute slowest way to create a layer (if you're charging by the hour), you can go under the Layer menu, under New, and choose Layer.

You can also choose New Layer from the Layers palette's pop-down menu if you're charging by the hour, but still have a deadline to meet.
