THE MODIFY MENU

Making the very best possible selection before compositing images is always better than trying to fix sloppy image edges after the elements are composited together. As with Feather, many of the Select > Modify commands can be re-created and improved upon with Quick Mask, filters, and tonal controls as discussed here. Remember, all of the Select > Modify commands require that you start with an active selection.

Border

When you select Modify > Border and type in a numeric value, you are telling Photoshop to redraw the selection as a double-edged selection that is the width of the value you typed (figure 3.28). Using a small border selection can be very useful when you need to carefully blur, darken, or refine image edges.
