Part IV: Subjective and Objective Compositing > PHOTOREALISTIC COMPOSITING

Chapter 12. PHOTOREALISTIC COMPOSITING

To see the best examples of photorealistic compositing, you need to go to the movies. Recent examples of excellently executed special effects include the launch sequence in Apollo 13 and the compositing of environments and live-action footage in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The special effects in Apollo 13 were so well done that after a screening for the actual astronauts and their families, Director Ron Howard was asked where he had found the footage and why NASA hadn't seen it before.

On the other hand, going to see a high-budget movie and being distracted by poor effects shatters our suspension of disbelief. Without it, we don't enjoy the movie because we view it as false, making it difficult to relate to the story and characters.
