Chapter 1. THE CREATIVE PROCESS AND CONFIGURING PHOTOSHOP

Some of the best conversations I've ever had about images take place when I'm not near a computer—during a brisk walk or over dinner with friends and an intriguing red wine. I enjoy discussing how images come together to create new meanings as I work on and learn from them. Often the conversation includes long forays into Photoshop as we discuss the best way to approach an imaging challenge, such as isolating a delicate subject from the background. What is taking place during these dinners is something I would like you to do: enjoy imagemaking wherever you are and let Photoshop be a conduit to your imagination. One thing I've learned from the thousands of Photoshop aficionados that I've met is, “We eat, breathe, and sleep Photoshop.” We have been known to ignore family, friends, pets, and plants as we work late into the night on a new creation.

Photoshop can never come up with an idea or create a compelling image on its own, and as I like to tell my students, “a keyboard shortcut for quality doesn't exist.” Before we get into the nuts and bolts of Photoshop, we're going to take a brief foray into the history of combining images and discuss composite categories.
