COLOR AND TONE SELECTIONS

Making good color and tone-based selections ranges from very straightforward to intricate and complex. The simpler color-based selections are made with the Magic Wand. The Magnetic Lasso tool is a good choice for images in which the color or tone of the subject is too similar to the image background for the Magic Wand to be useful. For more intricate color-based and tone-based selections, use the Color Range command found under the Select menu, as discussed in Chapter 3.

The Magic Wand

The Magic Wand seems to be everyone's favorite selection tool…well, except for me. I understand how it works but it never seems to work as well as I want it to. Rather than relying on it, I prefer to use the “magic wand with brains”—more commonly called Color Range, as described in Chapter 3. Perhaps you will have better luck with the Magic Wand, so I've included both technical and practical information for you to get to know the tool and make your own decisions about it.
