Chapter 8. SELECTING HAIR AND FINE DETAIL > WORKING WITH THE EXTRACT FILTER

WORKING WITH THE EXTRACT FILTER

The Extract filter separates soft-edged or finely detailed subjects from the image background. It also subtracts the color spill that the original background or environment reflected onto the object.

At first glance, the Extract filter interface may seem unwieldy, especially considering the fact that when you click OK, it deletes pixels—something that makes me very nervous. But if you provide the filter with the right definition of colors that you want to keep or delete, and transitional areas that contain both, it does a very good job. Better yet, if you take the time to prepare your file before entering the Extract interface, you can get even better results more quickly.
