Chapter 6. LAYERS ARE YOUR FRIENDS > WORKING WITH IMAGE EFFECTS LAYERS

WORKING WITH IMAGE EFFECTS LAYERS

Adjustment, fill, neutral and layer effects are all effect layers. They are used to add tone and color corrections, color fills and patterns, texture and light, and special effects to images.

  • The Adjustment Layers are among my very favorite features in Photoshop and are fully supported in 16-bit in Photoshop CS, letting you maintain greater image quality well into the imaging workflow.

  • Fill layers were introduced as a feature for Web designers, but as shown in Chapter 4, “Pen Tool Power,” you can use them to add special effects and image patterns to photographic images.

  • Neutral layers are a fantastic feature for adding texture, film grain, and lighting effects. Please see Chapter 12, “Photorealistic Compositing,” and Chapter 13, “Creative Compositing,” for additional uses of neutral layers.

  • Layer styles are a flexible method for adding special effects to layers, most commonly used for type.
