Chapter 13. CREATIVE COMPOSITING > IMAGES AND INSPIRATION

IMAGES AND INSPIRATION

Every artist and designer I know is a flea-market walker, used-book-sale browser, junk-day gatherer, and inspiration scavenger. We are always on the lookout for an interesting background to be found in a discarded piece of metal or tossed-away canvas.

My husband and I found the baby Jesus figure shown in figure 13.1 in a construction dumpster. Other objects we've found and brought home include a shattered golden halo; an ornately hideous wedding soup tureen replete with cooing doves and yellow roses; a flattened, dried-out squirrel carcass (figure 13.2); and numerous bugs and birds, which we scanned before burying them. All of these subjects are meaningful to us—often at the moment we don't know why—but we take pleasure in recognizing their stories, textures, and uniqueness.
