OPPOSITES AND DIFFERENCES ATTRACT

Having a positive outlook on life is a good thing, but when you're using Photoshop, having a negative outlook can be very beneficial. Thinking in negative values—light to dark or dark to light—can make selecting finely detailed or soft-edged subjects, such as the lupines in figure 9.1, much easier. The following technique accentuates the difference between the flowers and the sky and creates a mask that maintains the details of the flowers, so that you can insert a new sky, as shown in figure 9.2.
