Navigation Bars

The requirements document for the SVG specification states explicitly that SVG was intended to replace “many uses” of bitmap graphics. One of the most common uses for bitmap and, to a degree, binary vector graphics on the Web has been for the creation of navigation graphics, whether it is simple text, buttons, 3D buttons, or something a little more sophisticated. Needless to say, any of the commonly used types of navigation graphics can be created straightforwardly using SVG. In this chapter, I show you how to create a variety of SVG navigation graphics for Web pages, to familiarize you with the relevant techniques.

The most interesting types of navigation “furniture” incorporate additional SVG visual components, such as animations, gradients, and interactions. Look at the graphics you create in this chapter as visual components you can add to those other types of visual components later to produce the graphics you want.
