I want first to thank Tom Arah, whose prophetic 1999 article on the then embryonic SVG so excited my interest that I couldn’t resist dabbling with the emerging child that is SVG. Thanks, Tom.

I also want to thank the members of the SVG-Developers mailing list. The many discussions there are a great source of interest and education for me. I guess that it is invidious to single out individuals, but I particularly appreciate the patience and assistance of the editor of the SVG Recommendation, Jon Ferraiolo. The input on the list from Jon and from Chris Lilley, the chair of the W3C SVG Working Group, showed how open interaction with W3C can work well. Thanks, too, to Wade, Kevin, Stefan, Tobi, Michael, and all the others. You are a great bunch.

And I wouldn’t want to forget to thank the young lady who posed the question to me, “You wouldn’t remotely be interested in writing this, would you?” in a slightly different context. And the rest, as they say, is history. Thanks, Victoria!

Oh, and I need to thank Victoria Elzey again for being Development Editor on this project. The best development editors know how to handle their authors. Victoria has that art off to perfection.

I also want to thank the technical editors ElShaddai Edwards and Rick Cecil for their constructive comments and for spotting those little “slips” that it is all too easy for an author to make.

Thanks too to Steve Weiss, Executive Editor, and Theresa Gheen, Acquisitions Editor, for doing all the things that are best kept away from authors but are essential to turn a book from idea to reality. Thanks, too, to the many people at New Riders whom I have had no direct contact with but whose contributions helped make this book happen.
