The Optimization Process

In my mind, the best way to learn about optimization is by doing it and seeing the results. First, you need to determine and select the best file format. Different file formats use different methods to compress color information in graphics. Selecting the correct format for certain types of graphics is key in reducing file size.

You also need to understand how and when to use the format-specific options. Each file format contains its own set of options for controlling image compression. GIF file format contains a setting for dithering, number of colors, and transparency. JPEG compression contains matte, quality, selective quality, and smoothing.
