Chapter 11. Working with Behaviors

One of the quickest ways to create a good impression on your visitors is to present your content in a sophisticated layout with attractive graphics and subtle, yet intuitive, interactions. For years, the main technique for creating sophisticated and professional-looking layouts has been the use of HTML tables with merged cell regions, nested tables, and complex JavaScript interactions. Although this approach is sufficient to produce professional layouts, it can be difficult to maintain.

Today, because more applications and dynamic data are used on the web, code is more complex than ever. With DHTML, JavaScript functions usually appeared between the <head> tags, whereas the content between the <body> tags was mostly static HTML. Now, the content between the <body> tags can be more complex, with ASP or ColdFusion placeholders and sometimes hidden HTML form elements. Also, instead of relying exclusively on nested tables, many sites now use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to format and position elements.
