Chapter 16. Integrating Fireworks and Dr... > Web Authoring with Dreamweaver and F...

Web Authoring with Dreamweaver and Fireworks

Enter Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is the premiere web-authoring tool from Macromedia. It is the companion, or collaborative partner, of Fireworks. Both programs contain the new Macromedia MX user interface. They also both create and read JavaScript commands, and Dreamweaver interprets Fireworks-created behaviors along with its own. Because Dreamweaver can recognize images, either whole or sliced, as coming from Fireworks, it enables you to easily optimize images with Fireworks controls from inside Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver can also launch PNG, GIF, or JPEG images from Fireworks, where they can be edited and returned into Dreamweaver for updating. Suffice to say that this chapter certainly could warrant a book of its own. Many splendid variations, amazing tricks, and really cool techniques are based on the main topics that this chapter covers.

One key issue that web designers face is that of appropriate download time for their pages. Because a web page is generally a combination of text, graphics, and sometimes animation or movies, page download times vary. Times might arise when you have a simple web page with only a few graphics or images for the interface or illustrations, while at other times, your pages might contain more hefty amounts of content. Through testing your pages, analyzing the download time of its component parts, and optimizing your graphics and going back into your layout program and retesting, you can arrive at the proper combination and optimization settings to enable your pages to be seen in a reasonable amount of time on the modem speed with which you expect your users to browse.
