Chapter 15. Automation > Find and Replace with Multiple Files

Find and Replace with Multiple Files

Find and Replace can be used to make changes in multiple files as well as single files. The files don’t have to be opened; the Find and Replace dialog box asks what files to use. Also, this capability backs up files before making changes. All the attributes described earlier can be specified with multiple files.

To make a change to multiple files, open the Find and Replace panel by choosing Windows, Find and Replace, or Ctrl-F (for Windows) or Command-F (for a Macintosh) and select Search Files from the Search pop-up menu. The Open dialog box appears (see Figure 15.6), which allows you to select the files to search. Shift-select the files to be examined on Windows; this selects a contiguous range of files. To select a non-contiguous range of files, Ctrl-click the files that you want to examine. On a Macintosh, Shift-clicking allows you to select non-contiguous files in the window.
