Chapter 2. Capturing Common Images and M... > Shoot a Highly Reflective Object

10. Shoot a Highly Reflective Object

Trying to take a good picture (whether for insurance purposes or because you want to sell it) of an object with a reflective surface is often difficult. That's because its surface reflects everything around it, including the flash, the camera, and you, the photographer. The trick to getting a good photograph is to surround the object with white so that it has nothing to reflect. Using a white tent also allows you to light the object with soft, diffuse light. You can easily create your own tent, as shown here, but if you plan on taking a lot of photos of a similar nature, you might prefer a specially built light cocoon or tent specifically designed for product photography, available at most camera stores or online.
