What You Need to Get Started in Digital Photography

It wasn't too long ago that anyone interested in taking a good photograph simply wouldn't give a digital camera a second glance. Back then, digital cameras produced only low resolution, slightly blurry photos—good only for getting a quick shot of something you didn't want to print larger than 3''×5'', and certainly didn't want to keep forever. Well, times have changed, and you can now get quality results under most lighting conditions with a digital camera that won't cost you an arm and a leg. In this section, I'll show you what to look for when purchasing a digital camera and which accessories you might want to add. If you already own a digital camera, there's stuff in this section for you too—such as an overview of what all those buttons are for and the lowdown on the best scanners and printers to use.

KEY TERM

Resolution— In digital imaging, the number of pixels per inch/centimeter. The more pixels or dots of color, the more detail an image holds. Higher resolution images are full of color variations and sharpness but are also larger in file size.
