Part I: Working with Elements > Welcome to Photoshop Elements

Hour 1. Welcome to Photoshop Elements

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 is an amazing digital graphics program. It has tools that let you do virtually anything you can think of to a photo or any other kind of bitmapped art. Whoa! Only two sentences in and you’re already encountering what may be unfamiliar words. Bitmapped? Digital graphics? Don’t worry. It’s really easy, and you’ll be creating beautiful pictures before you know it.

The term digital graphics refers to any kind of graphic image—a photo, scanned art, a squiggle of color—that you’ve created or placed on an Elements page. Bitmapped graphics are shown on the screen as a mass of little colored bits or pixels . Each bit has a coded description of its color and position. If you make a change in one pixel—or a whole screen full—the computer will update the pixel descriptions and change the screen so you can see what you have done. Depending on how complicated the change is, and how much random access memory (RAM) your computer has available to do the math, your change may take anywhere from a fraction of a second to a minute or more.
