Hour 10. Straightening, Skewing, and Dis... > Task: Create Text and Its Shadow

Task: Create Text and Its Shadow

Let’s combine the flip techniques from last hour with the skew techniques to create some text and its reflection. Start off with a new image, using the default size, white background, and RGB.

1.
Use the Horizontal Type tool to type your name in whatever color you like. I chose Times New Roman, 72 pt, red type.

2.
Create a duplicate of the type layer by choosing Layer, Duplicate Layer.

3.
With the Move tool, move the duplicate type away from your original so you can see it. Because it will serve as the shadow, move the text directly below the original.

4.
Choose Image, Rotate, Flip Layer Vertical to flip the text upside down.

5.
Darken the shadow text a bit by clicking the Text tool and choosing a darker color from the color picker on the Options bar.

6.
Now you’re ready to skew the shadow text to make it look more like a shadow. Choose Image, Transform, Skew. Click the middle handle on the bottom of the text selection (the top of the text letters), and drag it to the right, tilting the shadow text in that direction. The result should look something like Figure 10.9.

Figure 10.9. Me and my shadow.

7.
Name your file My Name.psd and save it. We’ll do some more work on it later in this hour.
