Hour 8. Posting Your Work on the Web > Preparing Text for the Web

Preparing Text for the Web

You searched high and low and finally found the ultimate font that expresses the essence of you. Or maybe you had a custom font made up of your handwriting. What could be more personal than that? (You can do it at www.execpc.com/~adw/ for just under $100.)

So, naturally, you want to use your favorite font on your Web page. Well, guess what? Only the handful of folks who have that particular font installed will see your words your way. Worse yet, if it’s your very own big buck custom font, nobody will see it. Instead, they’ll see whatever their browser decides is a close match to the font you selected. Can you do anything about this? Sure. Set your type in Elements. Convert it to a GIF, and then paste it into the page. Because it’s now a graphic instead of text, it’ll look like your original. But it will take longer to load than regular text, so use it for titles rather than for entire pages. (If it’s your actual handwriting, or a very funky font, be sure it’s readable.)
