Hour 21. Going Wild with Your Images > Adjusting the Threshold

Adjusting the Threshold

As you learned last hour, the Threshold command is one of the ones you can use with an adjustment layer. You can also use the command on an entire image if you want. It converts the image into a black-and-white photo with very high contrast. You set the threshold, which determines which pixels are white and which ones are black.

To convert an entire image, choose Image, Adjustments, Threshold. There’s only one control in the dialog box that appears; set the Threshold value as desired. Pixels with a lower tonal value than the threshold are changed to white; pixels with a higher tonal value are changed to black. Figure 21.3 shows an image converted to black and white using the Threshold command.
