Thinking About Good Composition

I can talk for days about what makes good composition, but I’ll try to keep it to only a few minutes. By the way, you can see the photos that I’m talking about in this section in the color insert in the middle of the book. Please check them out.

Composition is what makes the difference between a merely good picture and a great one. Composing the picture correctly means making sure that the viewer sees the same scene that you, the artist, see. This should be important to you, because as an artist your task is to capture and share your unique vision of the world around you, whether it’s the smile on your baby’s face, the magnificence of the Grand Canyon at sunset, or a stormy day at the beach. How do you do this?
