Hour 19. Creating Art from Scratch > Task: Create Rain for Your Umbrella

Task: Create Rain for Your Umbrella

There are many ways in which you might create a rain effect for an image. We’ll use the Brush tool to create a simple effect.

1.
If it’s not already open, open the umbrella.psd file.

2.
Open the Layers palette and make the Background layer active.

3.
Select the Brush tool. Choose a 14-pixel Spatter brush tip (You’ll find Spatter near the middle of the brush tip list—just rest the mouse pointer on a brush tip style in the list, and its name appears). Use Normal blending mode, 100% opacity. Set the foreground color to a light grayish blue.

4.
Draw diagonal lines close together, in the manner of wind-swept rain. Make sure you don’t draw rain under your umbrella!

5.
Click the Impressionist Brush button on the Options bar. Click the More Options button, and set the Style to Loose Medium, the Area to 20 pixels, and the Tolerance to 0.

6.
Drag back and forth over your rain streaks, softening them. Your image will look something like the one shown in Figure 19.11.

Figure 19.11. A little rain never hurt anybody.

7.
Save the image and leave it open.
