Chapter 4. Using CSS with SVG > External CSS Style Sheets

External CSS Style Sheets

The fourth CSS styling technique that SVG offers is the use of external CSS style sheets. This offers significant advantages when a style in SVG images or Web pages extends across many documents. During the design phase, we can apply a style option across the site and test it for its visual appeal by making changes in, likely, a single external CSS style sheet. Similar advantages are available during site maintenance or style upgrade.

External style sheets do slow correct rendering of SVG images if your users have slow Web connections. The image or SVG Web page can render initially with only blacks and grays until the styling information is retrieved and made available to the SVG rendering engine. On a slow connection, the delay can be noticeable. The Web page at http://www.xmml.com/default.svg uses an external style sheet, and this effect can be seen if you have a slow connection.
