Chapter 12. SVG for Web Authoring > Using the foreignObject Element

Using the foreignObject Element

The absence of automatic text flow in SVG 1.0 is a distinct disadvantage to the developer, compared to the convenience of automatic text flow of HTML text content provided by the major Web browsers. In principle, the existence of the SVG 1.0 foreignObject element would allow SVG authors to simply place significant amounts of text in an XHTML foreign object and embed it in an SVG Web page. However, at the time of writing, the foreignObject element is not supported in Adobe SVG Viewer 3.0, the SVG viewer that has the most complete all-around SVG capabilities.

The X-Smiles browser, currently under development, allows SVG and XHTML to be mixed. Further information is available at http://www.x-smiles.org/. The latest information about the Adobe SVG Viewer should be accessible at http://www.adobe.com/svg/.
