Chapter 6. Paths in SVG > Using the path Element

Using the path Element

The path element is the SVG element used to define shapes of almost any arbitrary two-dimensional form.

Any of the basic graphic shapes that you saw in Chapter 3 can also be represented by a path element. The rect, line, and other basic graphic shapes simply provide an easier way to define and manipulate commonly used graphic shapes. The path element can also be used to create shapes approximating to a circle or ellipse element. For example, we could represent a square using either a rect element or a path element.
